The stitches in this dog hat pattern are very simple and ones you should already know: single crochet, single crochet 2 together, and slip stitch. It’s the yarn that does all of the color-work to create the playful striped effect!
I chose the “Scooter” colorway because it reminded me of things in the outdoors: blue for water or sky, green for trees, and grass, orange and yellow for sunrises and sunsets, and white for fluffy clouds. Perfect for your little “puppy” to play in!
Braided ties add the appearance of a dog chew rope to this puppy-inspired hat pattern. I have also included instructions for crocheted ties in case you prefer those instead.

How to Crochet Dog Ears For a Hat – Free Pattern Instructions:
There are two options for these ears: pointy and slightly rounded. I used slightly tighter tension for crocheting the ears than I did for the hat body.
Measurements:
Newborn-12 months: 2 ¾” wide, by 3 ½” tall
Toddler, child, adult: 3 ¼” across, by 5″ tall
Additional Notes:
-These ears are worked in continuous, unjoined rounds.
-Having a stitch marker handy will make this easier.
-I used tighter tension to crochet my ears than I did on the hat.
-You may add an extra round for longer ears for older ages if you want.
-The ears will be stiffer than the body of the hat. This will make them perkier and easier to shape.

Lay hat flat and position ears where you want them along top edge.
Sew the base of the ear to the hat.
Take the tip of the ear and fold it forward so that the point lines up with the front edge of the ear flaps. Sew it down a few rounds below where the base of your ears are with tail left over from the beginning of the ear.

Hi, im making this as a gift and in the notes its says not to cut the yarn and go into making the ears, however in the ear instructions it doesn’t say where to position the ears or anything? Im confused how to put them
Kirsten says
Hi Jos,
The earflaps are different from the dog ears themselves. The earflaps will cover the child’s ears so you’ll just start the first one as soon as you finish the last round of the hat body. There is information on how to space them between the first and second earflap. The dog ears themselves are at the bottom of the pattern and there is a note about how to position them there. 🙂 I hope that helps!

I’m working on adult size hat and I’m not seeing so far how its adult size. Any suggestions?
Kirsten says
If you are using the recommended yarn and your gauge matches what is listed then you should be ok. All the hats start out the same way, but the adult size hat has more increase rounds. 😊
Shelby says
hello! did you make the pointed or rounded ears in the example pic? thanks for the pattern!
Kirsten says
Hi Shelby,
I made the pointed dog ears for my example. 😊
Deejay Reiss says
Do you have a video of you making this hat. I can read a pattern just more of a visual learner
Kirsten says
Hi Deejay,
I only have written instructions for this hat pattern. 😅
Deejay Reiss says
Sad day…I am confused about the ears.
Are they apart of the hat or separate?
Do you have a video you recommend to help?
Kirsten says
The ears are worked separately and then sewed to the hat. I do not have a video for this pattern–only the written instructions.

Most adorable little hat! And while I thought chained ties would be better, the braided ties are really the perfect embellishment!
Kirsten says
Thank you! I tried the chained ties first because I also thought they might be better, but when I did the braided “rope” ties, I knew that’s exactly what the hat needed!
