There are 2 different hats here with two different stripe patterns. The first one comes in 2 sizes and fits large/x-large adult heads, and teen/small adult heads. The second pattern comes in 5 sizes and fits toddler-x-large adults heads. The first hat hat calls for 3 different colors of yarn to create the stripes, where as the second hat calls for only one color and creates stripes through the use of textured stitches. These colors can be similar to what I used, or you can use colors to match your guy’s favorite sports team for a more personalized touch.
I used #4 worsted weight Caron One Pound, yarn for these beanies. They come in a wide variety of hues so you’re sure to find something he will like! Both of these yarns are acrylic and are warm and durable while requiring very little specialized care–perfect for the men in your life!
Easy single, and half double crochet stitches make up the majority of these patterns so they are warm for winter weather, yet quick enough to crochet in an evening. Front post and back post stitches make up the ribbed brim. If you wish, the beanie can be made longer for additional warmth by adding extra rounds to the brim.

Barbara Dunbar says
Hi Kirsten!
Bought this pattern yesterday and love learning a new technique (third loop). Am making child’s hat and the ribbing starts at Round 17 but the hat is too shallow. According to the picture there should be another 6 or 8 rows.
Barbie
Kirsten says
I’m sorry your hat isn’t turning out long enough. Your stitches might be tighter than mine, or your yarn may be thinner. The child’s hat is not pictured in this post so you’re probably looking at the teen/small adult size (light blue hat). If you need to crochet extra rounds of the stripe pattern to get the length you need you are welcome to do that. 😊 I hope that solves the issue!
April says
Hi Kirsten!
I’m new to making hats and I love this pattern. I’ve read the information you have posted on working in the 3rd loop. For this pattern, do I work in the front or back 3rd loop?
Thanks for sharing this pattern!
Kirsten says
April,
You will work into the 3rd loop at the back of the stitch. This way it pushes the top of the stitch to the outside of the hat so the textured ribbing shows up. Here’s a little picture tutorial I put together showing how this works: https://kirstenhollowaydesigns.com/2021/01/how-to-crochet-in-the-3rd-loop-of-a-half-double-crochet-stitch.html
I’m glad you are enjoying the hat pattern!
Karen says
Hi. I’m a bit confused when doing the back loop HDC. Do I change direction before and after?
Kirsten says
Hi Karen,
You will work in the 3rd loop at the back of the stitch but never change direction. Here’s a picture tutorial that explains how to find the 3rd loop: https://kirstenhollowaydesigns.com/2021/01/how-to-crochet-in-the-3rd-loop-of-a-half-double-crochet-stitch.html
Claudia says
Hi Kerstin,
I love your work, thanks for sharing!
Could there be a mistake in the pattern #2 MEDIUM/LARGE Round 5?
Kirsten says
Ahh yes, I see there were some hdc stitches added in the repeats. It’s been fixed!
Carrie says
Hey Kirsten,
1st off thank you for being so sharing your talent with us.
I was wondering. Do we do the color changes before or after the row numbers? Like:
Color A
Row 7…
or
Row 7…
Color A
Thanks for your help!
Kirsten says
You can change colors wherever you feel comfortable. I tend to change color in the very last stitch of the previous round, but some people start in the first stitch of the new round. ????
Michelle says
I’m also confused about this because my color stripes are not matching up to the picture.
Kirsten says
Hi Michelle,
The color changes are listed directly above the row they will be used in. So you will see:
“With color B
Round X:”
Use color B in the round immediately following (round “X” in the example). 😊
Marsha says
Maybe a strange question, but what size head does this fit? My hubby has a big head so many hats are too small.
Kirsten says
It should fit the average man’s head (23″-24″), but you may want to go up a hook size if you crochet tightly and are worried about it fitting him. Be sure to check your gauge too!
Sarah says
Do you cut the yarn at each color change or carry it on the wrong side?
Kirsten says
Just carry them down the inside of the hat, and you won’t have so many ends to weave in. 🙂
Melinda owens says
How would you make this with bulky yarn?
Kirsten says
You could try taking out an increase round or two and leave off the bottom stripe, and see how that works.
It was designed to be a big hat even using worsted weight yarn, so I’m not sure how it will turn out when using #5 yarn.
Anna says
You are awesome to allow the pic and to include a small business. Thank you. I have a booth in an antique mall. Is that okay too?
Kirsten says
Hi Anna,
Craft fairs, and boutiques are fine to sell at as long as you are the one making all the pieces. 🙂
