There is something about homemade, or DIY fall decor that makes my heart happy. I don’t know if it’s the rich earthy hues, or how cozy everything looks in the autumn sunlight, but it fills a special place in me that nothing else can. This past week Fall arrived at my place, and between the just-changing leaves, and the smell of frost in the air, I felt the need to crochet something that would fit the mood.
These crochet canning jar cozy patterns combine the rustic farmhouse feel of hemp with the elegance of lace for a unique home decor piece that you can make in an hour or so. These canning jar covers would also make great gifts when giving away home-canned jams, jellies, preserves, or fruit to friends and neighbors. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t want to be thought of in such a sweet way. ♥
I crocheted my cozies to cover most of the jar, but you could make yours shorter so they only cover the bottom 2-3 inches or so. In addition, I’ve included instructions for prepping these to use as stand-alone baskets. There are so many uses for these: covers for various bottles and jars in your house, such as candy jar covers, cotton ball jar covers, etc., or, made out of sock yarn, the pint size pattern may even make good baby bottle covers for larger bottles such as these.
See! So many options! Now that you are as excited as I am, let’s get started. 😀

Difficulty:
Intermediate
Materials Needed:
1 ball 10 lb 100% Hemp Cord (400 ft) (this is a fine weight cord)
4mm (G) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
scissors
yarn needle
1 yard 1/4″ ribbon in the color of your choice
Canning Jars – Quart size
Canning Jars – Pint size

sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet

Additional Terms:
BLO = back loop only. Work each stitch for the round in the back loop of the stitch. This will create a small line along the outside of the jar.
V-Stitch = (dc, ch 1, dc) in the same stitch.
Gauge:
2 1/2″ across after round 3 for pint jar cozy, 3 3/4″ across after round 6 for quart jar cozy.
Measurements:
When followed as written: laid flat, pint jar cozy will measure 5″ tall by 4 1/4″ wide, quart jar cozy will measure 6 1/2″ tall by 5″ wide.
Additional Notes:
-This pattern is easy to follow, however, since it is made with hemp, I’ve labeled this as an intermediate pattern. It would be possible to make these using sock yarn, if you do not feel comfortable working with non-traditional materials (hemp) just yet.
–Because hemp is not stretchy, it is very important that you crochet loosely so these will fit over the jars. I tested mine on my jars every few rounds as I went along. You may find it beneficial to do that as well, especially if you have not worked with hemp before. If all else fails, don’t be afraid to go up a hook size or more.
-If you find the cord is hurting your hands you may be using too much tension.

If you would like to turn these into baskets, here are some additional steps to take:
Blocking: lightly spray the piece with water and pat off the excess with a towel, then slide it over a jar and let dry. Once dry you could paint them with Mod Podge to stiffen them.

I don’t have Hemp cord. Can I use Mercandized Crochet Cotton No. 10 in placed of the Hemp? Is it the same weight?
Hi Peggy, I’d use #5 or #3 thread. Those would be closer than #10. My hemp cord is probably somewhere between a #5 and and #3, so you will need to adjust your hook size. Hemp cord can be picked up in most craft stores in the jewelry making section. 🙂
I love your patterns! They seem to me to be what crochet should be, though I know sometimes simple is what you want. I’m currently enjoying having learned and doing C2C crochet with Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable, colorway Candied. I think I’ll do a blanket.
Thank you, Patty! I’m honored you feel that way! Enjoy making your blanket! 🙂
I’ve never worked with hemp cord before, but this was so much fun! The way the pattern worked up was beautiful. I can’t wait for jam season to hit so I can share this with everyone I know!
Wonderful! I’m sure your friends will love their gifts! 😀
