How to crochet a hat with flowers
Flowers make a cute accessory to add to any little girls hat. This pattern includes 2 different flower tutorials, as well as leaves. This easy hat pattern starts at the top and is crocheted in the round. Change the color for the band, or leave it the same! Your flowers can be any color and you can arrange them in any way you like.
I have included some additional instructions at the bottom of the post for sewing your flowers and leaves down just in case you are new to this. Add as many or as few flowers as you like! If smaller leaves are more your style, I have a tiny leaf pattern over on this page.

Small flower:
Round 1: 10 sc in magic circle (cinch center leaving a small hole for the second part of the flower).
Round 2: ch 1, 5 hdc in first st, sl st in next st, *5 hdc in next st, sl st in next st; repeat from * around, final sl st counts as join. (5 petals)
After you sew the small flower to your hat you can sew the center in.
Small flower center:
Thread about 12″ of your dark yarn color on your yarn needle. Sew through the center of the flower and up into the stitch where you worked the 5 hdc petal. Repeat for each petal. This will give you a “spoke” shape.
With the lighter yarn color make a French knot in the center of the flower. You can make more than 1 knot if you want an additional level of detail.
Fasten off, weave in all ends.
Positioning your flowers and sewing them onto the hat
I positioned my flowers over the seam to hide it.
Place largest flower where you would like it and tack down the center of the flower with the yarn tail from the center of the magic circle. You can also sew the button in place which will do the same thing.
Place leaves so the large flower overlaps them, and sew the first few stitches in place. You’ll finish sewing them down after your large flower is sewn on.
Finish sewing the large flower on.
Place small flowers very close to the outer edges of the large flower. They should almost look squished up against that flower when it lays flat. Once the hat is on your head the flowers will spread out a little bit, and you don’t want huge gaps.

What size is the “child size” for your free pattern?
It should fit the average 4-8 yr old. The finished dimensions are listed before the pattern begins (be sure to meet gauge). It should fit up to a 21 1/2″ head circumference. 😊
Thank you so much! Entered this finished hat into our local county fair and it took first place. Very beautiful and detailed design.
You’re welcome! Congratulations on winning first place with your hat! 😁
Is the pattern avaliable for newborn or a bit older?
No, I’m sorry. The PDF has 12 month size as the smallest available.
Pattern is so easy to follow thank you. Just one hitch for me. What does 2 tc mean in 7th round please. Thanks in advance.
That should be tr for treble crochet. I’ve fixed the typo!
So cute! Is child size too big for younger than 24 months old? Or is there way to make it little smaller?
Yes. It would be too big. I have 3 additional sizes included in the paid pdf on Ravelry or LoveCrafts. 😊
Thank you!💕
Wanting to make this but I’m allergic to wool. Is there another yarn that you could recommend? Thanks
Hi Rita,
Caron Simply Soft might work as a substitute. 🙂
Some of the new Bamboo, Cotton blend, or Silk yarns would be nice! They work up so nice too!
I am trying to crochet the large flower. I do not understand where i shall put the first slipstich in round 4 and 6. Where is the senter. I am Norwegian and trying to crochet from an english pattern for the first time
Your first petal should look a bit like a half-circle from the back. You’ll work into the center of the bottom part of the petal (flat part). It’s not super technical, so don’t stress too much. If you still have questions please feel free to join my Facebook group, linked at the bottom of this post, and ask questions there. 😊
I had the same question and not too happy about it. I’m frustrated I can’t figure out the pattern already and now I have to go somewhere else to get the other half of the answer???
I’m sorry you’re having trouble with this flower too. What about the flower are you having issues with? The reason I suggest my Facebook grouo is that you may be able to get help faster from the group members if I am away from the computer for a while. 😊
Kirsten, as I said I was frustrated and I’m so sorry I took it out on you at the time! Thank for your reply.
I will go to the group with my question.
It’s in regard to the 4th round. Do you have a video of this flower?
You’re welcome! The group is a great place and full of very helpful ladies. I’m sure you’ll feel right at home. I do not have a video of this flower, but here’s what I can tell you that might be helpful. When you’re slip stitching into the center, back of the petal in round 3, try going through just the back half of the dc stitch close to the bottom of the stitch. You are building the “framework” for the next round of the flower to be worked into. I, or one of the other ladies in the group can help point things out further if you share a picture of where you’re stuck. 😊
Hi there. Making this cute hat today. I’m off on my stitch count.
Can you help me out?
Round 10 says nineteen petals. I’ve got 19.
Round 11 has 5 stitches per petal. That makes 95 stitches. The pattern says round 11 has 76 stitches. Round 12 says 76 also. I’m holding off on this for now. Any ideas? I would appreciate your input.
There was an error that added an extra stitch in round 11. It should be fixed now. Each petal should get 4 sts, not 5. 😊
Hello – does the pattern we purchase include a diagram?
No, it’s only the written pattern instructions and notes.
