When Katy gave me the opportunity to play around with beautifully colored, and squishably soft hand-dyed yarn I jumped at the opportunity! I love natural fibers and this 100% Marino wool is truly a pleasure to crochet with.
One of my favorite things about hand dyed yarn is how individualistic each skein turns out–no two are the same! I got to play with “Caroline”, a rose pink tonal colorway, and “Bryna”, which is brown, but has blue, red, and yellow speckles throughout.
If you have to have some of this gorgeous yarn I’ve included a link to KT & The Squid’s website in the materials list below so you can order some too.

BPsc = back post single crochet
BPhdc = back post half double crochet

Additional Terms:
Picot: ch 2, sl st back into first st
Working in the 3rd Loop of hdc – Instructions: Look at the top of the stitch, and locate the sideways “V”, bend the stitch to look at the back and you should see another “V” made by the “yarn over”. You’ll be working into the back loop of that “V”. This is called the 3rd loop.
Measurements:
Adult (84 sts): 10” wide by 7 3/4” tall
Child (76 sts): 9 1/2” wide by 7” tall
Toddler (72 sts): 9” wide by 6 1/4” tall
12 mos (68 sts): 8 1/2” wide by 5 1/2” tall
Gauge:
6 1/4” across after round 9. 16 hdc in 4”
Additional Notes:
-Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch.
-This hat is worked in multiples of 4.
-Squid Worsted weight is closer to a #3 light weight yarn. Bernat Baby Sport would be a fine substitute.
-If your stitch counts are not coming out right after round 8 make sure you did 3dc clusters and not 3 separate dc stitches. 😊

Love the pattern. I did it but I couldn’t upload the picture. Thank you
You’re welcome! I’m glad you had fun crocheting this hat! 😊
I love how this hat turned out thank you!
You’re welcome, Tonya! I hope you enjoy wearing your new hat! 😊
I got to row 9 and now am lost, it doesn’t add up to 72. If I crochet in each stitch with 2 in every 5th stitch I get 144 stitches. If I crochet in the chain spaces with 2 every 5th stitch, I get 36 stitches. Where exactly do the 72 stitches go? If you count each cluster of 3 and each chain space as a stitch, it adds up, but where do you put the stitches in the clusters?
Elise,
It sounds like you are making 3 separate dc stitches instead of 3dc cluster stitches. Cluster stitches should only have 1 stitch at the top. 😅 I hope that helps!
Row 8 of adult hat seems to be missing a star * help me out here??
The missing star has been located and firmly tacked into place. Refresh the page and you should see the changes. 😅
I’ve just torn this out for the 4th time. Once was my own fault, messed up my stitch count, but the other 3 times were due to gauge issues. I was unable to get the proper gauge using the recommended hook size, so I went up to a 5.5, and was still off by 3/4 of an inch. I am about to start over again with a 6. It seems much too large for the yarn weight. Hoping for success though.
Im sorry you are having so much trouble meeting gauge. What size yarn are you using? I recommend Bernat Baby Sport yarn if you can’t get ahold of a hand-dyed worsted yarn that will work.
I am using the proper weight. I’ve just finished now and it turned out beautifully. Thank you for the pattern!
You’re welcome! 😊
I am really struggling with the 9th row, I end up with way more than 72 stiches. I am good on stitch count right up until this round. What am I doing wrong?
Kelly
Hi Kelly,
You may be making groups of 3 separate dc instead of the clusters the pattern calls for. I hope that helps! 😊
oh goodness, I finally got it! I was doing a decrease 3 dc stitch. thank you
I’m glad you got it figured out! 😊
You are awesome. Thanks for sharing
You’re welcome! I’m glad you like the hat pattern, Valencia. 😊
Thanks for pattern! now I learned the cluster Im doing well finishing the hat.
You’re very welcome! 🙂
I am stuck after round 8 of child size. I have many more stitches than 72 going into round 9. Help pls.
Terry,
Make sure you are crocheting cluster stitches and not groups of 3 separate dc stitches. 😊
Would it be possible to do a pattern for 0-6 mo?
I don’t have a 0-6 mos size hat for this design. Try using a thinner yarn and smaller hook and the 12 months size might fit a smaller baby. 😊
Round 12 is ch 1, ch 1…? So 2 chains?
It should only be a ch-1. I thought I fixed that typo ages ago, but I guess not. It should be fixed now. 😅
Hi! I have a question about row 2 and 3. I’ve done the clusters for row 2 and have done 12 clusters as per the instructions. The next row asks for 3 hdc in each stutch going round resulting in 36 stitches. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong..
I’ve done the clusters and ended up with 15 stitches, so when I’m done with the next row I will end up with more than 36 stitches please help! I’ve pulled this out more times than I’m willing to admit lol
Miriam,
You’ll want to make sure you are making clusters and not groups of 3 separate dc. Also, the 3 hdc stitches in the next round should only be worked in the ch-1 sps. That could be what’s throwing the stitch count off. I hope this helps you!
I am confused on round 9 just like in a previous question/comment. I’m not sure I understand the working in a cluster. Please explain further. Thank you.
You’ll work in the top of the cluster just like you would into a normal sc or dc stitch. Are you uncertain how to make a cluster stitch?
I was but I finally figured it out! I didn’t know that there was such a thing as the 3 dc cluster stich. Still learning 🙂 I am finding the hat to be a bit on the short side. Could be the Gauge but I’m really unsure. When would I have measured to make sure it was an average 12 month size?
The 12 mos beanie should be 8 1/2″ wide and 5 1/2″ tall. It should fit the average 12 month old’s head. The average 12 month old’s head should measure about 18″ in circumference. This hat should have plenty of stretch if you used relaxed tension and should have no trouble stretching out to fit. I hope that helps!
I am late to the game, and the Squid Squish Worsted is not to be found any longer. is this a true worsted weight (#4)? Or is it one that is on the thinner side, more like a heavy DK? The size hook is throwing me off as I expect at least a 5.0 on most worsted patterns.
I love all the other patterns of yours that I have made thus far! They are great for my charity stash since several come in multiple sizes, like this one.
It’s more like a heavy DK weight. I have also made this pattern with Bernat Baby Softee and met gauge. 😊
I used Mandala Ombre. It’s a 4 wt and squishy. Turned out great. Thank you!
You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear that you like how your hat turned out. 😁
That’s the yarn I was going to use. Glad to hear it worked for you. Now I feel better about starting. Thank you.
Hello! I love this beautiful pattern. I have a question on the adult size row 4. What is the 3rd loop of the HDC? Im stuck. Thank you for the great pattern and for your time.
The 3rd loop is the yarn over for the hdc stitch. It’s especially visible from the back. Here’s a link to a video describing how to find it on a different pattern of mine that is worked in rows instead of rounds: https://www.facebook.com/kirstenhollowaydesigns/videos/1884031391814874/
