Sock yarn can be used for a variety of crochet projects–not just socks!
I LOVE sock yarn for other items, and I hope after this project you will too! It tends to be nice and stretchy without losing its shape, and the variety of shades it comes in can make for some very beautiful color transitions! I used Patons Kroy Socks for this project because of how many lovely color combinations it comes in. The Kroy Socks FX in particular has some beautiful color changes which you can see especially well in the blue-green hat. You can either follow my color suggestions, listed in the materials section, or you can experiment with your own! Note: I “hacked” one of my yarns to get the colors to combine the way I wanted them to. It’s as easy as cutting where one color stripe begins and ends, setting that section aside, and then attaching the next color to the hat. I’ve explained a little more in the “additional notes” section.

Difficulty:
Easy
Materials Needed:
2.75mm (C) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
2.35mm steel hook for poppy button flower on baby sizes
90-170 yards #1 fingering weight Patons Kroy Socks, and Kroy Socks FX yarn in 3 colors. I used Cascade Colors, Brown Rose Marl, Muslin, and Flax on the hats pictured.
Yarn needle
Scissors
Yarn needle for sewing on button, and weaving in ends
3/4″ Organic Elements Coconut button
Stitches Used:
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
tr = treble crochet (small flower only)
Additional Terms:
BLO = back loop only
Gauge:
19 hdc stitches in 4″. Hat should measure 4 1/2″ across after round 9.
Measurements:
0-3 Months: 4 1/2″ tall by 7″ wide
3-6 Months: 5 1/4” tall by 7 3/4” wide
6-12 Months: 5 1/2” tall by 8 1/2” wide
Child: 6 1/2” tall by 9 1/2” wide
Adult: 7” tall by 10 1/4” wide
Additional Notes:
-Loose tension is a must when working the hat and button flower. Go up a hook size or two, if needed, until you can meet gauge, otherwise your hat will be too small.
-Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
–*CHOKING WARNING* Because button flowers are detachable and could pose a choking hazard, this hat should never be used as a play toy, or the baby left unattended while wearing it.
-Once you join the new color you will join to the 1st stitch of that row with a slip stitch. I carry my colors down inside of the hat, instead of cutting after each round of color changes, that way there are not as many ends to weave in later.
-this pattern requires a little bit of “yarn hacking” if using the colors I recommend, specifically when using the Brown Rose Marl. To get a pink band and pink flower you will need to cut the yarn when it changes to brown, then wind up the rest of the length of brown and set it aside, and then join the next pink segment. A little variation adds some character though so you can see where I left the small stripes of brown in the flower on the pink and brown hat.
-The large poppy flower is more complex than the small flower, just take it one comma at a time.

Large Button Flower (Poppy):
This luscious flower’s petals are created in 2 rounds or “levels”. You will slip stitch up and down the dc stitches from the previous round to get to the second “level”. This is the most difficult part of the flower, so if you can understand this step ahead of time you should breeze right through it. It’s more simple than it may initially appear!
One more tip: Use a smaller hook (2.35mm) for the baby hat sizes. Make sure your chain is loose enough for the button to slip snugly through.
Round 1: ch 10, sl st into first ch creating ring.
Round 2: ch 1, 20 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (20 sc)
Make sure your button can snugly pass through this opening before moving on. If the button doesn’t go through the ring, go up a hook size and start the flower over.
Round 3: ch 1, dc in next 9 stitches, (dc, ch 1, sl st) in next st, (ch 1, dc) in next st, dc in next 9 sts], ch 1, sl st in final st. (2 petals with 10 dc each)
Round 4: sl st into ch-1 from previous round, sl st into first dc of previous round (this is the top of the first petal), ch 1, 2 dc in first st, [2 dc in next 9 sts], ch 1, sl st into final st of petal, sl st into ch-1 from previous round, sl st into sl st of previous round, now you’ll start working up the side of the second petal. Sl st into ch-1 from previous round, sl st into the first dc of the petal, ch 1, 2 dc in first st, [2 dc in next 9 sts], ch 1, sl st into final st of petal, sl st into ch-1 from previous round, sl st into sl st of previous round.
Round 5: flip the flower over and work this round at the back of the flower, behind the petals. sl st into next 4 sts, ch 5, sk approximately 4 or 5 sts (unevenness makes the flower look more natural), sl st, ch 5, sk 5 to 6 sts, sl st, ch 5, sk 4 to 5 sts, sl st, ch 5, sl st into first ch of round to join. (4 ch-5 sps)
Round 6: flip the flower back over and work on the right side. Sl st into first ch-5 sp, ch 1, 10 dc in ch-5 space, ch 1, sl st into same space *sl st into next ch-5 sp, ch 1, 10 dc in ch-5 sp, ch 1, sl st into same space; repeat from * around, finalnsl st counts as join. (4 petals with 10 dc in each)
Round 7: sl into first sl st from previous round, sl st into ch-1 from previous round, sl st into dc of first petal from previous round, ch 1, 2 dc in same stitch [2 dc in next 9 sts] ch 1, sl st into final dc of petal, sl st into ch-1 *sl st into sl st from previous round, sl st into ch-1 from previous round sl st into dc of next petal from previous round, ch 1, 2 dc in same st [2 dc in next 9 sts] ch 1, sl st into final dc of petal, sl st into ch 1; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sl st. (4 petals with 20 dc in each)

Just wondering how many hats you get out of three skeins of sock yarn, seems expensive to me! Just my opinion! Your hats are lovely!
You can get approximately 2 baby (0-3 or 3-6 mos) hats out of a skein. 🙂 These sock yarns give a high-end look to the hat that cheaper sock yarns do not. You are welcome to substitute if you need to though.
There is no Round 5 for the big flower. Was it omitted, or is the numbering just off?
The numbering was just off is all. It’s fixed now!
Thanks I love this pattern. I made mine more unisex and done a wave on the contrast colour with slip stitch. It’s adorable.
You’re welcome! I’m sure it’s very cute!
Beautiful, thank you! Just right for a Spring newborn 🙂
You're welcome! 🙂
