One of my favorite past times is crocheting warm hats for the homeless and needy in my community. This hat began as a quick stash-busting project where I was trying to use up odds and ends of yarn.
I had some fuzzy yarn that had been in my stash for quite a while but I never knew what to do with it, and when you don’t know what to do, keeping it simple is sometimes best. The resulting crochet hat pattern uses easy stitches, is so fast to make, AND is beginner friendly! You can use the Bernat Freesia yarn I recommend (you’ll need to hold two strands together in that case), or dig through your collection for a soft, fuzzy #5 bulky yarn, and a matching #4 worsted weight yarn. Similar yarns would be Lion Brand “Homespun” Thick & Quick, or Yarn Bee “Luciana”.
I designed this pattern to be slightly slouchy, but if you would prefer to make a hat with a more snug fit you can leave out the last couple rounds before the band.

Additional Notes:
–You will need to hold two strands of the recommended yarn together to obtain the proper gauge.
-Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a st.
-After increases end, always start new rounds in same stitch as join.
-When working the band, the plain sc sts in the final 3 rounds can be worked as center single crochet (the “crochet knit stitch”) to give a knit look to the design.

If you prefer to use a single strand of the recommended yarn, the following pattern works great for that! These won’t be quite a “poofy” as the version above, but they may be easier to crochet if you are struggling with figuring out where to place your hook.
