This bonnet pattern matches my Layer Cake set, but it’s made in a light-weight sock yarn just for babies! Here’s what it looks like using a very pale tonal pink yarn:
I love how the shell stitches, cluster stitches, and post stitches work together to create the rich cakey textures in the bonnet. In case you didn’t know, “Petit Fours” are little French deserts that are highly decorated.

I just reading thru the pattern first (12-18 mo ) are the flaps included in the patterh – and not marked or is there a separate part of that pattern somewhere else.
I can see the hat ties are there .
I don;t see a lot of measurements listed for total hat and circumference of finished product if using XX needle.

Hi Maria,
Nothing should be missing. The bonnet starts with the circle at the back of the head, and then it switches to rows (which will be the portions that go down the side of the face) leaving a gap for the neck. I hope that helps!

Hi! I made the 0-3 month size of bonnet & it did not work out and I’m sure where I went wrong. It is flat and definitely won’t fit around a babies head like it shown in the pictures above. Any guess what I did wrong ?
Kirsten says
Hmm, I’m sorry your bonnet didn’t work out. Did you increase too many times? Only the back should be flat, but the sides should suck in close to the baby’s head. Please feel free to join my Facebook group and ask questions there. You can also share pictures so we can help you figure things out. 😊
Taylor says
Thank you I will do that!

Hi,
I’m working on the 12-18 size, I’m on round 19. I’ve sc’ed in the 81 stitches and chained 1, I’m now at the part where I need to sc 5 down side etc. But it says it will put me on round 9?
I don’t understand this part, am I working downwards instead of across? How will working 5 sc put me on round 9?
Thank you in advance!
Kirsten says
This part is stitching around the gap for the neck. So once you stitch down the sides of the stitches that create that gap you’ll be down on round 9 for a short space, then you’ll come up the other side of the neck gap. 😊

Hi! I’m on Row 9 for the Newborn, and I had the correct number of clusters before with row 8. Now when I finish row 9, I have wayy more than 64 stitches at the end… How am I messing up? Or am I misreading the count?
Kirsten says
Are you making 3dc cluster stitches or groups of 3 separate dc stitches in round 8? A 3dc cluster stitch will only have 1 stitch at the top. 😊 That could be where you are picking up the extra stitches.

Oof. This is where I went wrong!

Is there a way to make this for an adult?
Kirsten says
You can use #3 light weight yarn and a larger hook (maybe 4mm) and I think the largest size would work. I have a beanie version of this hat in adult sizes in a different post:https://kirstenhollowaydesigns.com/2020/11/cute-lace-hat-pattern-free-crochet-tutorial.html 😊 I hope this helps!

Hi! I’m loving the pattern so far but on row 18 on the newborn size it says to FP HD and sc but should it not be BPHd and sc? Otherwise I don’t get the shell look on the outside of the hat.
Kirsten says
Since this bonnet is worked in rows at this point, your previous row with the shells should have been worked on the “right side”. This next row (row 18) will be worked on the “wrong side”. This means that the FP stitches will look like BP stitches once the bonnet is finished. I hope that makes sense!

Hello!
I’m a fan who has made several of the primrose and proper headbands, as well as the primrose and proper beanie.
Question about yarn- would any #1 yarn work? I have some 100% cotton (Aunt Lydias #1) I would like to try…but I’m not sure. It’s my first foray into thinner yarns and pieces
Kirsten says
I am not familiar with Aunt Lydia’s #1 thread so I can’t tell you if it would work or not. You can use the gauge information in my pattern and if you can meet gauge with the recommended hook size (or by going up or down a hook size) then it should work. Otherwise, stick to a #1 sock-weight yarn for best results. 😊
